House

I have my quotes in and there is no difference in price between electric and gas boilers.

Electric:-
will fit in a small space and give me back a kitchen cupboard
is less likely to explode and kill me
is quieter

Gas:-
will still leave me with a small space in the airing cupboard for towel storage
is cheaper to run slightly
may appeal more to future house buyers

I'm coming down on the side of electric, but it depends how long I am going to be here I think. "Home or house" question!

Any other strong views?

Gas: keeps working in a power cut?

Not sure actually - don't pilot lights need an electrical ignition these days and the thermostat is electric?

Good thing to ask the engineer I think!

Worst case - match, saucepan creating hot water bottle. Although as no internet I think I'd be round a mate's house within 20 minutes :)

No, modern ones have electrical pumps and controllers and things.

It appears I know a lot less than I thought I did about boilers and gas.

Either that or I'm identifying a market niche for gas boilers with backup batteries...

now that I would pay for!

I always thought electricity was vastly more expensive than gas for heating.

about 3 times as much, but I don't have the heating on that much due to the cold helping my condition a lot. But yes - maybe an extra tenner a month.

Gas is a lower refined energy source. Electricity is a highly refined energy source. Heating only needs low refined energy. Therefore use gas for heating. You're not using energy that has been refined more than you need. It's a bit like using your washing up water to flush the toilet, compared with mains drinking quality water. Even if the cost isn't much different it's morally better.
