As people asked, quick film review.

This film very very much wants to be The Hunger Games. It has a strong feisty female lead experiencing a first romance; it has a dystopian future; it bounds past the Bechdel test with flying colours. An attractive man takes his shirt off (once). There are myriad sub cultures. There is a suspicious political thing going on. There's some fighting, and some blood. There's some proper death. With real dead people. etc.

The teenagers in the cinema (it was packed) clearly fancy one of the actors in it, I was surrounded by squee and tales of smudged eyeliner in the ladies afterwards.

Kate Winslet was excellent value in a "is she good/ is she evil" role.

I had "Issues" with the film as it showed everything I hate about Myers Briggs typology, but that's work related so probably only an issue for me! The world building was too scant for my liking; who the hell decides peace is best achieved by splitting people into 5 tribes? Where is the SCIENCE? Where is the process step discouraging GROUP THINK? I mean from an organisational design perspective it SUCKS! This is just the sort of film I should be a specialist consultant on.

Also WTF IS OUTSIDE THE WALL? Nobody knew why they protected the things inside the wall from things outside, because there was nothing outside. I was at least hoping for a Lost style smoke monster but no, we do not know.

At 139 minutes it really should have more plot. There's kind of a sorting hat scene at the beginning although you get to disagree with the hat. There's a lot of becoming assimilated into the group, while being an outsider, I had to double check for no Whedon input at that stage.

The ending is a bit limp with a load of loose ends, just to get you ready for the next 2 in the trilogy. IMDB lists just the 2 sequels this time, btw. No cheaty film splitting.

If like me you have a cineworld card and three hours to kill, go for it. Otherwise I'd probably skip it and try the book, unless you have a 12 - 14 year old you need to entertain for the afternoon.
