Ranty Feminist Poem
Mar. 10th, 2013 07:22 pm
I was a member of a gaming forum. One of the men posted the following
"Best wishes to all women in our guild in the International Women's Day Don't ever change girls- we love you for who you are ;)"
Another member posted
"they are taking over mate, im telling you, its a trap!"
This is a quote from the International Women's Day website explaining what the modern event is about. This year's theme was THE GENDER AGENDA: GAINING MOMENTUM
http://www.internationalwomensday.com/about.asp
"Annually on 8 March, thousands of events are held throughout the world to inspire women and celebrate achievements. A global web of rich and diverse local activity connects women from all around the world ranging from political rallies, business conferences, government activities and networking events through to local women's craft markets, theatric performances, fashion parades and more.
Many global corporations have also started to more actively support IWD by running their own internal events and through supporting external ones. For example, on 8 March search engine and media giant Google some years even changes its logo on its global search pages. Year on year IWD is certainly increasing in status. The United States even designates the whole month of March as 'Women's History Month'.
So make a difference, think globally and act locally !! Make everyday International Women's Day. Do your bit to ensure that the future for girls is bright, equal, safe and rewarding."
This is my angry poem.
I do not think you understand the point of this event
Your words are patronising though I'm sure they're kindly meant
Not mother's father's valentines or secretary's day
You do not send us all a card and send us on our way
I own a house; I can buy cigs and booze and sharp, sharp knives
I have not been a "girl" since back in nineteen eighty five
I do not give a shit if you want me to "never change"
So please take back your words, I find them odd and sickly strange
I do not know where you got the thought that you could now decide
If we're allowed to alter, or in statis must abide
And lest you think that you are now supportive and refreshing,
I do not know why you should think we care about your blessing
And let me reassure you that my words are not from "cycles"
My fuse is not that short, I'm not simply being spiteful
I am not on the rag; it is not the menopause
I think you'll find my words are the effect, and you are cause
What I really want for women's day, a cause for celebration
Would be equal pay for equal work across our own fair nation
And for women spread across the rest of our planet earth
I wish for true equality right from the point of birth
Equal rights to education, equal rights to choice
Equal rights to speak, and have us listen to their voice
No rape, no sales to slavery, no female circumcision
Your trite cliched paternal words do not progress this vision
