Three films this week (have to make the most of holidays, and also reward myself for hitting wordcounts!) Reviews have *minor spoilers* only.
American Hustle
Christian Bale as 70s balding aging confidence trickster falls foul of Bradley Cooper's wannbe big FBI man. Scams ensue!
Thing to know about this film
- the wardrobe is AWESOME
- the soundtrack is AWESOMER
- OMG the haircuts!
- Jeremy Renner's haircut should get an Oscar to itself!
The scams are cool and believable. I got Amy Adams confused with Rebecca Mader. Good entertainment, and not too much violence. Some. But not Scarface levels.
Last Vegas
4 old dudes go on a batcherlor party to Vegas so Muchel Douglas WITH NO SENCE OF IRONY can marry a woman 40 years younger than him to help him feel young.
Nice advertising for the Aria hotel, I think they'd need more cash than they had to get the suite they had. Good life affirming stuff for those of us wondering what retirement holds. It ain't art. Wait until it's on TV.
The Secret Life of Walter Mitty
I had severe reservations about htis after seeing the trailer where Ben Stiller tells you that he hopes you will love his film as much as he wants you to. I can't find it on youtube so it may just have been a special pre-hobbity thing.
Anyway.
There is a lot of Sherlock style mind palace on screen type but it is so subtle and beautiful and blending with its background, it's a thing of joy. I mean, lens flare? So last year, this is the new thing we do now.
The cinematography is amazing. Everything has a meaning; it's like watching The Shining and working out the riddles.
And I came out ready to GODDAMN LIVE LIFE!!
It was a thing of utter, utter joy, as well as art, and I can see why it took him so damn long to make it, and why he's proud of it. And this is coming from thick skinned Emma here! GO SEE!
